Chicken & Sweet Potato Jerky Bites

The treat that lives in the side pocket of your hiking pack. These chewy, protein-packed jerky bites travel well, hold up in the heat, and give you something to reach for when your pup needs a little fuel halfway up the trail. Four ingredients, one bowl, and a snack that beats anything you can buy at the trailhead.

Ingredients

  • 1 cooked chicken breast, shredded
  • ½ cup mashed cooked sweet potato
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup oat flour

How to make them

  1. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Combine the shredded chicken, mashed sweet potato, egg, and oat flour in a bowl. Mix until the texture is dough-like and holds together.
  3. Roll the dough into small logs, or flatten into bite-sized shapes on parchment paper.
  4. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, flipping the jerky bites after 20 minutes for even drying.
  5. Let them cool completely on the parchment — the chewy texture sets as they cool.
Keep them happy
Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to a week, or freeze for longer shelf life. For trail packing, let them dry slightly longer in the oven (another 10–15 minutes) so they're firmer and travel-friendly. Make sure the chicken is fully cooked and unseasoned — no garlic, onion, or salt.
