Ever get home after a long day and immediately start complaining to your dog?
About the traffic, your coworkers, or the woman who cut you off at the grocery store.
Your dog has no clue what you’re talking about. Doesn’t matter. You’re telling them anyway.
Obviously, your dog needs you. Someone has to feed them, let them outside, and make sure they don’t eat a dead squirrel off the sidewalk. But you’ve gotten pretty attached to having them around, too.
Here are 25 signs you might need your dog just as much as they need you.

1. You Explain Where You’re Going Every Time You Leave
“I’m just running to the store. I’ll be back in an hour.” You might even tell them what you’re buying. Apparently, your dog needs to know your afternoon plans.
2. You Look for Them Before You Greet Anyone Else
You walk in the door and ask, “Where’s the dog?” before you’ve even said hello to anyone else. Sorry, family.
3. You’ve Used Them as an Excuse to Cancel Plans
You tell your friends you don’t want to leave your dog home alone again. Which is true. You also don’t want to get dressed and go anywhere. Netflix and belly rubs sound pretty good.
4. You Know the Weather Forecast Because of Their Walks
You couldn’t tell someone what the weather will be like Saturday, but you know the rain will stop in 20 minutes. You’ve been checking all afternoon.
5. You Have Full Conversations with Them in the Car
You ask if they want to stop for coffee, complain about other drivers, and tell them about your day. Meanwhile, they’re in the back seat eating crumbs that have been there since 2021.
6. You’ve Been in the Same Position for an Hour
Your legs are numb, your phone is dead, and you have to pee. Unfortunately, your dog is asleep on your lap, and moving them isn’t an option.
7. They’re the First One You Tell When Something Good Happens
Got a promotion? Finally heard back about that job? Your dog gets the news, too. Usually in a ridiculously excited voice that would make a kindergartener tell you to tone it down.
8. You Secretly Enjoy the Walks You Dread
You spend ten minutes complaining about going outside in the cold. Then you get out there, and it’s actually nice. Don’t tell anyone.
9. You Know the Difference Between All Their Sighs
There’s the dramatic sigh when you won’t share your dinner, the bored sigh when nobody will play, and the sleepy one when they’ve finally gotten comfortable. You know exactly which is which.
10. You’ve Left a Party Early Because You Missed Them
You’re having a fun time, but you’ve been out for hours. Another drink? Maybe. Going home, changing into pajamas, and hanging out with your dog? Much more tempting.
11. You Tell Them Things You Haven’t Told Anyone Else
You’ve sat on the kitchen floor and told your dog about something you haven’t even mentioned to your friends. They may have wandered off halfway through, but at least you got it off your chest.
12. You’ve Spent More Time Watching the Pet Camera Than Talking to Your Date
You’ve been waiting weeks for the date, but you’re still checking the pet camera throughout dinner. While your date is telling you about their mild allergy to cantaloupe, you’re already thinking about getting home and putting on matching PJs with your dog.
At this point, your dog might be the better date.
13. You Say “We” When Talking About Your Weekend Plans
When a friend calls with weekend plans, you respond with “We’re probably just staying home Saturday.” “Who’s we?” “Me and the dog.” Obviously.
14. You Can’t Relax Until They’re Settled
You’ve finally sat down with your tea and turned on your show, but your dog keeps pacing around. Would they please just pick a spot and lie down already?
15. You Automatically Save Them a Bite
You’re making breakfast and, without thinking, set aside a little piece of something they can safely eat. You probably don’t even realize you’re doing it anymore.
16. You’ve Rehearsed a Speech in Front of Them
Maybe you’re planning to ask for a raise or finally tell someone what’s been bothering you. Your dog has already heard what you’re going to say. Several times, actually.
17. You Know the Sound of Their Footsteps
You can tell when they’re heading for the kitchen, coming to find you, or sneaking into a room they’re not allowed in. You don’t even have to look up.
18. Your House Is Arranged Around Their Favorite Spot
You’d really like to move that chair across the room. The problem? It’s where your dog naps in the afternoon sun. So, the chair stays.
19. You Don’t Want to Embarrass Yourself in Front of Them
You’re singing at the top of your lungs or dancing around the kitchen when you notice your dog staring at you. For some reason, you stop. Why is this embarrassing?
20. You’ve Caught Yourself Making Plans Around Their Bedtime
Someone wants to meet up at 9 p.m., and your first thought is that your dog will already be asleep. Since when did you start keeping the same bedtime as your dog?
21. You’ve Shown a Stranger Pictures of Them
Someone asks what kind of dog you have. Five minutes later, you’re still scrolling through pictures. They probably didn’t need to see the Halloween costume from three years ago, but here we are.
22. You Feel Lost When They’re Not Home
Your dog is at the groomers, but it feels like they’ve been gone for weeks. You keep calling their name, thinking they will pop up from their favorite spot at any moment.
23. Your Favorite Part of the Morning Involves Them
Nothing beats spending a few minutes with your dog on the front porch before everyone else gets up. Coffee tastes better this way.
24. You Get Offended When They Choose Someone Else
You buy the food, make the vet appointments, and take them outside when it’s pouring rain. Then they go curl up with someone who hasn’t lifted a finger. Excuse me?
25. You Can’t Wait to Get Home to Them
You can’t stop watching the clock at work because you want to get home to see your dog. You don’t have big plans, but you can’t wait to change into something comfortable, curl up with your dog, and wind down.
Life Is Just Better with a Dog
You probably have dog hair on whatever you’re wearing right now. A toy has been under the couch for weeks, and you can’t remember the last time you ate something without a dog watching every bite.
Would it be nice to have a little less fur around the house? Sure. Would you trade any of it? Not a chance.
How guilty are you of these? Tell us in the comments.
