   The Cul-de-Sac Mayor

   Knows every dog on the street well enough to have a different reaction for each one. Not the owners. The dogs. Pauses at four specific mailboxes on every walk like they're checking in with someone, and skips the fifth one because the vibe is off that day. You'll never know why.

Live commentary the whole way, voice getting higher as the truck gets closer like the situation is escalating in real time. The guys on the truck know your pup by now. One of them waves most weeks, which for some reason makes the whole performance louder, not calmer.

    6:45am, sprinklers on, and your dog is mid-air before the second head even pops up. Fully committed. Lands wrong every time and does not care one bit. Somebody's Ring cam three houses down has forty seconds of this saved from April, unprompted, because it kept happening.

    Nobody has said anything. Nobody has deleted it either.

    Every runner who goes by is a personal insult. Doesn't matter that it's the same guy who runs past at 6am every morning before the heat hits and has never so much as glanced at your house. The pace picks up, the body leans into the fence line, and for about three seconds you can see them thinking today is the day.

    There aren't a whole lot of joggers coming down your street anymore.

    A moving truck shows up two doors down and the assessment begins immediately. Weeks of quiet observation from the front yard, no barking, no fuss, just watching. Sometime around week three there's a single approving sniff at the fence line and that's it, the new family is in.
