It is here - SEC football season!
You and your furry companion are undoubtedly getting ready for what will be an incredible football season. The summer is winding down, but the heat is ramping up.
SEC kickoff season is notorious for a hot late August and early September. That means you need to plan ahead for you and your beloved buddy, and proper planning can make for a seamless start to your tailgating adventures.
We learned the hard way so you don’t have to, trust us, this list is everything! You won’t have to remember a thing.
And if you have always assumed your dog pulled for your team… you need to find out what team your dog ACTUALLY pulls for – check out our most recent Darling Dog quiz → What SEC team does your dog REALLY pull for?
Beat the Heat
Tailgating is one of the most fun parts of football season. Of course, a dog-friendly tailgate is even better! However, the South is famous for our hot August and September game days. And I mean, it gets HOT! Therefore, you need to plan ahead.
A few of our favorite ways to keep our dogs cool during SEC football tailgating:
- Take breaks – Get your pooch out of the sun and into air conditioning – even if that means putting them in the car for a few minutes.
- Shade – If there isn’t shade, create it! Set up a canopy or patio umbrella for your pup to lounge under. You may take a lesson from them and enjoy the shade, too.
- Frozen treats – A dog favorite, frozen treats are not only a tasty snack but can keep your dog’s internal temperature at a safe level. Easy to make. Try freezing dog-safe peanut butter in a Kong toy (be sure there are no added sugars or xylitol in the peanut butter)
And a few of our favorite things (for us AND them!) we bring with us:

It can be risky to take your dog into busy places like tailgates. Be sure to prep ahead of time to ensure your best friend stays found. Invest in a secure leash. That means NOT a retractable one. Many people love retractable leashes, but they are the most dangerous and ineffective choices for safety.
Crowds, gates, strangers – your dog may be overwhelmed. The secure leash will keep them safe and protected by your side. A hands-free tie-out stake or anchor is also a great choice once you reach your destination. Before you go, update your tag information in addition to double-checking the microchip registration, if they have a chip.
Comfort and Downtime
Consider tailgating a “home away from home” space for your dog. You want to provide a safe and relaxed environment for your pooch – especially with all the extra noise and stimulus. Bring along their favorite bed, blanket, and/or toy. The familiar smell and touch will provide comfort.
If you want to go the extra mile, you can buy SEC-team-related gear for your pup. Just be sure it doesn’t stress them out more. Try a bandana with your favorite team’s logo and colors!
Keep them Busy and Safe
The best thing to do to prevent fear and overstimulation for your dog during a tailgate season opener is to keep them busy. Distraction keeps them safe and focused on something other than the football riff-raff.
Choose a toy or long-lasting dog chew for their downtime. Be sure to watch your dog to ensure they don’t pick up any human scraps – or alcohol of any kind – to keep them safe. Alcohol and food spills happen. I mean, come on, it’s a tailgate! But you can still be smart and safe about it. Be sure to watch for those hazards to prevent an unexpected visit to the vet.
The Read-the-Room Check
Let’s be honest here: Not every dog is made for a tailgate party. As much as we want our beloved besties with us, some canines are just not meant for the fast life. They can experience overwhelm, and it can jeopardize both their safety and health.
Here are the signs of overwhelm to look out for:
- Panting
- Pacing
- Trying to hide
- Tail between legs
- Drooling
If you are at a tailgate or party and spot any of these signs, it’s probably time to pack up and go, at least take a break. Your dog’s safety and health take priority, be sure they can handle the intense atmosphere. As tough as it may be, you may have to make the decision to bring them back home.
This football season is going to be incredible!
Imagine it: your best friends, the hyped energy of the crowd, the delicious food, the camaraderie and fandom, and your furry best friend right there by your side. Prepping a tailgate packing list for dogs makes everything easier and allows you the freedom to have fun – and stay safe.
Packing the right things for your pup can make it a seamless experience where you can have fun and not feel stressed – and your dog will thank you. Get ready for an incredible SEC season with you and your pooch!
